How it works

  1. Choose the documents

Drag one or more .docx files into the workspace or use the button. The first time, the converter downloads about 2 MB from MovaDoc itself.

  2. Convert

Each document is split into pages following Word’s rules, with fonts that have the same widths as the Office ones, and drawn into a PDF with searchable text.

  3. Download the PDF

With several documents, you get one PDF per document in a ZIP. You can also continue with another tool, for example to merge or compress.

Frequently asked questions

Are my documents uploaded to a server?

No. The document is read and converted in your browser, on your device. The first time, your browser downloads the layout engine and the fonts (about 2 MB) from MovaDoc itself; after that, conversion works offline.

Will the PDF look the same as in Word?

Very close for most documents, but not identical. Text, headings, lists, tables, images, headers and footers (with page numbers), footnotes, and columns carry over. Office fonts (Calibri, Cambria, Times New Roman, Arial, and Courier New) are replaced by free fonts with the same widths, so lines and pages should break in the same places, but there can be differences (for example, Word’s automatic hyphenation isn’t applied). The result wasn’t compared with PDFs made by Word itself: if the document matters, check the PDF.

What doesn’t make it into the PDF?

Charts, SmartArt, and most shapes (arrows, stars, callouts) become gray boxes; text in old text boxes (from Word 2003) and old WordArt doesn’t appear; comments don’t appear, and tracked changes are shown accepted. EMF and WMF images (common in old logos) are redrawn and may look slightly different, and some symbols that MovaDoc’s fonts don’t have (like the ➢ and ✓ list bullets) are replaced with similar ones (► and √). After converting, MovaDoc tells you what happened in each document.

What if the document uses other fonts?

Fonts other than Calibri, Cambria, Times New Roman, Arial, or Courier New (including Aptos, Word’s default font since 2024) are replaced by the closest match, serif or sans serif, so lines and pages may break differently. Arabic, Hebrew, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text doesn’t appear.

Can I convert .doc, .odt, or .rtf files?

No, only .docx. Open the document in Word, LibreOffice, or Google Docs and save (or download) it as .docx. Password-protected documents don’t open either: remove the password in Word first.
