Frequently asked questions
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs in your browser and the PDF never leaves your device, unlike many online compression services.
How much smaller will my PDF get?
It depends on the content. PDFs with photos or scanned pages usually shrink a lot. Text-only PDFs are already small and barely change. In that case, we tell you and give you the original.
Why do other sites compress more?
Some use server software (such as Ghostscript) that rewrites the whole PDF. Here everything runs on your device, without uploading the file: we recompress JPEG photos and downscale those with very high resolution. For some PDFs, the reduction is smaller.
Will the text look worse?
No. Text, fonts and vector drawings stay exactly the same. Only JPEG photos are recompressed and, if their resolution is very high for the page, downscaled.
What’s the difference between the levels?
“Light” keeps images almost the same and caps them at 300 dpi. “Recommended” uses 200 dpi and slightly lower quality. “Strong” uses 150 dpi and compresses more, which shows in photos viewed up close.
