Annotate PDF

Highlight, underline and strike out text, type on top, draw shapes, arrows and freehand, add a logo or a stamp, and leave notes with comments. Move things around, undo what you don’t want, then download the annotated PDF. The file stays on your device.

How it works

  1. Choose the PDF

Drag the file onto the workspace or use the button. If it’s password-protected, type the password to open it.

  2. Type and draw on top

Highlight, underline or strike out text, type, draw shapes, arrows and freehand, add images and leave notes. Move and resize them, pick the color and undo anything you don’t want.

  3. Download the annotated PDF

You get a new PDF with your annotations. The original stays as it was.

Frequently asked questions

Are my files uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is opened and annotated in your browser and never leaves your device. What you type isn’t saved either: it’s gone when you close the page.

Do the annotations show up in other programs?

Yes. They’re standard PDF annotations, with their drawing saved in the file itself, so they look the same in PDF readers and when you print. We checked them in the PDF readers built into Chrome, Edge and Firefox; Adobe Acrobat Reader and Preview on the Mac also show this kind of annotation. In those programs, whoever gets the PDF can move or delete the annotations and read the note comments. To make them part of the page, continue with “Flatten PDF”.

Can I change the text that’s already in the PDF?

No. In a PDF, text isn’t stored like in a word processor: each word is drawn in a fixed place, and the embedded font often only has the characters used, so changing a word would break the page. To add text, use the “Text” tool. To remove information for good (names, numbers…), use “Redact PDF”.

What about annotations the PDF already had?

They stay in the file as they were, and the new ones are added after them. Most of them show on the page while you annotate, but they can’t be edited here. To make them part of the page or remove them, use “Flatten PDF”.

Which characters can I use in text boxes?

Those of the Latin alphabet, with the accents of Portuguese, Spanish and other European languages, in the Inter font, which is embedded in the PDF. Characters from other alphabets (for example, Chinese or Arabic) show as “?”, and MovaDoc warns you as you type.
