Protect PDF with a password

Choose the password that opens the PDF and what people can do with it. The file and the password stay on your device.

PDF files

Files are opened on your device and never uploaded.

How it works

  1. Choose the PDF

Drag the file into the workspace or use the button. With several PDFs, they all get the same password.

  2. Choose the password and permissions

Type it twice and decide whether the PDF can be printed, copied or edited.

  3. Download the protected PDF

The PDF is encrypted on your device (with AES-256, or AES-128 if you choose it) and only opens with the password. The original stays as it was.

Frequently asked questions

Is the file or the password uploaded to a server?

No. The PDF is protected in your browser and neither the file nor the password leaves your device. The password isn’t stored either: not in the browser, not in recipes.

What kind of protection is used?

By default, AES-256, the strongest password protection in the PDF standard, which current PDF readers open. For very old readers, you can choose AES-128. Either way, the PDF’s text, images and metadata are encrypted. Security depends mostly on the password: use a long one that’s hard to guess.

What if I forget the password?

There’s no way to recover it: MovaDoc doesn’t store it. Only the password to open or the owner password (if you chose one) opens the file. Keep them somewhere safe, for example in a password manager.

Do the permissions (print, copy, edit) really prevent those actions?

Most PDF readers respect them, but some programs ignore them. They show what the author allows; what really protects the content is the password to open.

Can I protect a PDF that already has a password?

Yes. MovaDoc first asks for the current password to open it on your device, then applies the new protection, which replaces the old one.
